Humanising Healthcare

The patient experience

The patient’s experience of care is central to this whole debate. Patients’ experiences are as important as [statistical] evidence and need to be captured and shared: Patient Voices have a major part to play here.

A benchmark could be to consider how a patient is cared for who is friendless and alone in a ward at 3am, as in Jenny's story 'Out of reach'.
We need to move people, professionals and healthcare workers with stories: need to move them emotionally: to move people out of their comfort zone. Stories are:

‘Intellect rooted in emotion, emotion structured by intellect - in other words, a good idea that moves.'
Yann Martel
