Humanising Healthcare

What do we understand by ‘humanising healthcare’?

The system within which health professionals are trained is [often] unhealthy; people are de-humanised in the process. We need to find ways that professionals can reconnect to their human – and humane – side: no one goes into health care to do harm and they need to be able to act humanely.
We need to find ways for people to see beyond their preconceptions and perceptions. The blend of different experiences makes a difference to how people perceive their world.
We want to develop a healthcare system that is fit for the 21st century while reconnecting with the principles of the Beveridge 1948 ideals of the beginning of the NHS. We need to address 21st century healthcare, professionalism and citizenship: it is a different world to the world of 20th century healthcare.
