Welcome to the Patient Voices programme

The Patient Voices programme was founded by Pip Hardy and Tony Sumner in 2003, and aims to facilitate the telling and the hearing of some of the unwritten and unspoken stories of ordinary people so that those who devise and implement strategy in health and social care, as well as the professionals and clinicians directly involved in care, may carry out their duties in a more informed and compassionate manner. We hope that, as a result of seeing the stories, patients, their carers and clinicians may meet as equals and work respectfully together for the benefit of all.

We would ask all users of the stories to be mindful of the license conditions for their use, particularly that they may not be modified. It is important that they remain as they are released by us, in order to retain the integrity of the story shared by the storyteller with us, to keep in place any acknowlegements that may be necessary to comply with the conditions we agree to when we licence music or images for use in a story, and to maintain the visibility of the Patient Voices Programme and Pilgrim Projects so that viewers of stories understand their provenance and where they may find out more.

Please let us know how and when you use the stories, so that we can use your experiences to persuade sponsors to support the development of more stories for everyone to use. Please join the discussion group so that we can let you know when new stories, workshops or publications are available.

Through its carefully developed methodology, the programme facilitates the telling and sharing of stories of care by all stakeholders. The innovative model of free distribution of resulting stories for use in health and social care education and quality improvement ensures that those voices are heard, and that the investment of storytellers is nurtured to develop maximum social capital.

The elements of the Patient Voices programme are:

  • the production and distribution of the Patient Voices digital stories themselves
  • workshops that enable healthcare professionals, carers and patients to develop their own stories and narratives
  • consultancy and support on the integration and use of digital stories within healthcare development programmes
  • research into the uses and applications of digital stories in healthcare quality improvement and as reflective tools in healthcare education
  • development and identification of resources that support the use of digital storytelling in health and social care.

These are underpinned by an ongoing academic programme in inter-professional education and lifelong learning. To find out more, discover what's new, find out when our next workshop is running, or view some of the Patient Voices digital stories, click on the links above.
